Three college kids, a good day birding and finally warmer weather

 No kidding, I was walking into the beginning of the open space and three college age kids were exiting. The male had a point and shoot camera of some kind and there were two young women with him, one of the young ladies had on a miniskirt and high heels and the other was dressed in sweatpants and shirt. I was speechless never having seen this before and I just kept shaking my head in wonderment. The young lady in high heels was struggling to walk and no wonder as most of the open space is sand or small gravel and I'm sure her shoes were probably filled with both. She had to be very uncomfortable and was probably not happy with the groups decision to go for a walk in the forest when she clearly didn't have the right clothes. 

Warmer weather is finally here! The temperature this morning was 40 degrees a far cry from the 20's and low 30's. There were a bunch of kids playing in the woods near the exit and they were having a great time, dragging tree limbs and branches everywhere and running around yelling at each other. All the yelling wasn't good for bird photography but it was nice to see kids out of the house, enjoying mother nature and having a great time outside. The children were all wearing masks and didn't appear to bothered at all. 


I'm not usually into taking pictures of seagulls in fact I don't think I've ever taken any pictures of gulls before. I've been trying to improve my pictures of birds in flight though and there was a large flock of gulls floating in the water of flying just above the water. I've tried taking pictures of them before and usually I just get a mass of blurred birds but this morning the pictures came out much better.

  Capturing birds in flight like the Cooper's hawk above has been quite an adventure into photography for me. I'm not sure that the average person knows exactly how hard it is to capture a sharp image, but I can tell you it's more difficult than one would think. A Northern Goshawk

Goshawks usually reside in the northern United States. When prey is scarce, though, they may be found well to the south of their normal range. A couple of days ago while walking through the open space, I passed by a tree where some birds were making a huge ruckus. I stopped, turned around, and tried to figure out what was causing the birds to be upset. I didn't see the goshawk right away; it was camouflaged almost perfectly against a thick tree branch. The goshawk didn't move, fly away, or alert me in anyway that it was there, but the birds sure knew. Finally I saw it, an eyas (juvenile hawk), which might explain why it didn't fly away, just not experienced yet. The goshawk was not huge by any standard and had beautiful feathers that it was seemingly shedding. Goshawks hunt their prey by putting on short bursts of amazingly fast flight, twisting among branches and crashing through thickets in the intensity of pursuit. A blue Grosbeak

 I rarely see one of these beautiful birds. They are usually found in fields as was the case with this one. Males are blue with two brown wing bars. A mated pair of Grosbeaks usually raise two broods of nestings per year.They build their nests low in small trees, shrubs and tangles in vines. The oldest grosbeak on record was a male who was at least 7 years and two months old when he was captured and re released during banding operation in Virginia.
