A pair of black-crowned night herons for my birthday
Walking on the upper trail of the Alameda open space yesterday, I spotted a large bird in a tree and snapped a couple of pics but was too far away. The bird appeared to be a heron but I wasn't sure as it was very large and I couldn't get a profile view to see feathers, etc. As I got closer I could see there were actually two of them, something I've not seen with herons before. They must have been young, as they didn't fly away immediately like most herons do when they spot a person approaching. The morning light was just amazing and although I walk this trail several times a week, everything looked different. The hard rain the night before may have had an impact.
