A limpkin, not a pumpkin which spellcheck is trying to force me to use. I think it highly likely that the map lady and the evil spell checker are out to get me as they never leave me alone. I've never seen a limpkin before this picture but what a picturesque bird. Limpkins are large heron like birds(keeping with the last few posts on herons) but are actually more related to rails. Limpkins are found in marshes or swamps and regularly seen at the edge of ponds. Limpkins feed almost exclusively on apple snails which must be tough with all the habitat loss birds have experienced. Their voice is a loud creaky wail often heard as an eerie jungle sound in films. This picture is from Sweetwater Wetlands in Gainesville , FL. Thinking about the title of the blog the pictures from Fl. don't really belong here but since it's all about birds I'm not going to worry.
